10 key spring/summer 09 fashion trends
|
1. Colour-blocking
Bold single block colors will be a key look this season but two tone colour-blocking (wearing two or more colors) will set you apart from the rest in the fashion stakes.
Wear "two" complimentary colours together for a harmonious look - think bright pinks with vivid fuchsias, turquoise with royal blue or orange and red (see picture on right).
Or take this trend one step further by deliberately contrasting "three" block colors. See the Josh Goot outfit pictured below right, in green, yellow and candy pink!
Go for a neutral-toned shoe to keep it simple, or go all out on the look with a loud, contrasting shoe or handbag.

2. Tribal trend
Perhaps this summer's biggest trend - tribal - is inspired by Africa, Egypt and the Orient.
For day, the animal print look is a good choice or safari casual, with beige shorts and simple sandals. Or simply team up relaxed fabrics in earthy tones (see picture right) with bold tribal inspired jewellery, shoes or a scarf. The regal side of the tribal trend is perfect for evening wear, with sheer flowing fabrics draped to perfection.
Gladiator inspired sandals (studded, buckled or beaded in skin print, metallic or plain) are perfect to complete the tribal look.

3. Jumpsuits
The soft jumpsuit will be big this season, not least for its versatility and wearability. The jumpsuit combines all the ease of a dress with the comfort of wearing pants.
The utility styles of the ‘70s and‘80s have made way for the silky, soft, drapey fabrics of this season, far more feminine and flattering than their counterparts. The soft slouchy (and often unbelted) look communicates a retro-luxe-attitude.
Wear long jumpsuits with ultra-tall heels or wedges to avoid looking frumpy.

4. Asymmetric necklines
Show off your shoulders this spring and summer with the latest looks in asymmetric necklines.
From loose billowy styles to more tailored silhouettes, this style is perfect for summer evenings and you'll find it in feminine silky fabrics, soft nude neutrals or bold brights of tangerine, fuchsia pink and cobalt blue.
Keep your dress short if there is a lot of detail on the top and add a brooch on the shoulder for more detailing or sparkle.
And when choosing the perfect shoes, remember the rule.. simple shoes for a busy dress or statement shoes for a simple dress.

5. New nudes
Texture and silhouette come to life in a neutral palette.
As a rule, the choice of which neutral to wear depends on your skin tone. Paler skins suit darker neutrals in cinnamon and coffee, while darker complexions can wear more creamy colours .
Layer up pieces in the same hue or wear a few different tones.
Black, beige, tan, nude and metallic shoes look best with new season neutrals.

 |
6. Harem pants
This new season pants silhouette can be worn casually or dress it up.
For the most flattering shape, keep it tight on top; a camisole top or tailored jacket is perfect. Define a waist by always tucking in tops. Make the most of the season’s elaborate, waisted belts and use your midriff as a staging ground for adornment .
High-heeled, strappy statement sandals work best. Or if you're lucky enough to be tall, then you can get away with pretty metallic, bejeweled or studded flats, which look great on long legs!
|

 |
7. Denim
This season, denim isn't playing by the rules, anything goes.
Distressed denim is the hottest denim finish of the season and can be seen in dresses, skirts, jackets and jeans.
Platforms, gladiators, ballets and court shoes all look great with this versatile trend.
|

 |
8. Spring florals
Pretty floral prints always look the part in spring.
Go for a bold all-over floral , or give an outfit extra style factor with a floral blazer over another, contrasting, floral-printed dress or top.
Wear with edgy, even fierce shoes to avoid looking overly precious. Or with classic ballets, courts and sandals.
|

 |
9. Midi skirt
Hemlines dip below the knee this spring for a more modest look.
Tall heels make the modest length sexy, while bare legs stop the look from looking frumpy.
Keep the waistline high and wear with a sheer blouse for an on-trend look for work or play.
|

 |
10. Summer nights
Generous floating fabric in asymmetric or ancient greek inspired styles will be seen on the red carpet this season.
Clinched waists flatter the classic, womanly curve and gilded, statement belts and bangles give the look modern appeal.
Heels and platforms add height, while ruffles, pleats, bows, lace and satin add elegance and romance.
